Sunset over the Pacific

There is something unsettling about a sunset over the ocean. The sun doesn't simply set but it negotiates its exit bleeding orange and crimson across the water as if reluctant to leave, as if trying to remind you of something you've forgotten or deliberately left behind. And you stand there small and salt-aired, watching a star die its daily death while the ocean that has swallowed civilizations and kept every secret ever whispered into it.

Perhaps that's the provocation hidden inside every sunset: the universe is breathtaking and utterly indifferent, and yet we are the only ones troubled by the combination.
